Over this past semester I had the opportunity to work with 3D extrusion printers in ceramics. It is exciting to combine these very new and very old technologies to create work. I love how the texture left behind by the printing process is reminiscent of archeological digs with their many layers, of textiles with their many strands, and of basketry with their strong formed weaves and wefts. 3D modeling offers the possibility for high levels of geometrical symmetry to occur as a natural part of the work process, setting it apart from wheel throwing and hand-building. These are all elements which I enjoyed playing into in my work.
